President Buhari will on Wednesday visit Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The President will use his visit to flag off the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) conference which begins today. He is also expected to meet the troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole at the theatre command fighting insurgency in the north-east region. The planned visit by the Commander-in-Chief comes about two weeks after the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), a Boko Haram splinter group, killed dozens of soldiers in Metele, a remote village near the border with the Niger Republic.
The Federal Government yesterday described the rate of illiteracy in the country as alarming. The Minister of Education Mallam Adamu Adamu made the remark when he paid a courtesy call on Governor Atiku Bagudu of Kebbi State in Brinin Kebbi. Police said 17 persons were killed and 24 people, injured when Boko Haram insurgents staged a coordinated attack on Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital on Wednesday night. This was confirmed by the commissioner of police, Damian Chukwu during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Maiduguri, where he said three Boko Haram suicide Bombers were shot dead as security personnel battle to repeal an invasion late Wednesday. Barely 18 hours after the deadly attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents on Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital, acting president Yemi Osinbajo yesterday defied the presumed security threat, paying a one-day working visit to the troubled town. The attack by members of the Boko Haram on Maiduguri was yesterday successfully repelled by the Nigerians military. The office of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) will challenge a suit seeking compensation for victims of Nigerian Airforce bombing at Rann IDPs camp on January 17. Tijani Gazalli, a senior state counsel, asked a Federal High Court in Abuja for time to bring a preliminary objection challenging the jurisdiction of the court to hear the fundamental rights enforcement suit.
